Cross Country Opens 2022 Season at TCNJ Blue/Gold Invite

EWING, NJ – The University of New Jersey City men’s and women’s cross country teams opened their 2022 seasons tonight, Friday, Sept. 2, in South Jersey at the Blue/Gold Invitational, hosted by the New Jersey Foe Athletic Conference (NJAC) The College of New Jersey.

On the women’s side, three teams competed in the 3.5k event – the host Lions, another NJAC team at Montclair State University and the NJCU. Three runners competed for the Gothic Knights on the day, all in their first-ever 3.5km collegiate, senior-led race Tiffany Ortiz (Jersey City, NJ / University Academy Charter), who placed 23rd with a time of 17:17.0. Second year Nyla Boyd (Thomson, GA/Thomson) was right behind her in 24th and crossed the finish line in 18:53.5. The Jersey City shutdown was in the second year Ashley Adames (Jersey City, NJ/County Prep)who posted a time of 20:05.4 in his collegiate cross country debut.

On the men’s side, only NJCU and TCNJ competed in what was the first collegiate 6k race for all Gothic Knights who participated that day. Senior Jaime Tlatelpa (Jersey City, NJ / University Academy Charter) led the way for the Gothic Knights, finishing 16th overall with a time of 21:36.4. Junior Jake Sisk (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) came in just behind him in 17th with a time of 22:17.3. Four other green and gold runners also competed, as seniors Adnan Kpodo (Irvington, NJ/Irvington) and Denilson Lopez (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) placed 18th and 19th with times of 22:58.7 and 23:06.4, respectively. First-year student David Velez (Elizabeth, NJ/Alexander Hamilton Prep) came 20th with a time of 24:10.9 in his college debut, while second Vladimir Pericles (Elizabeth, NJ/Thomas Edison Academy) placed 21st with a time of 25:49.2.

Jersey City returns to action next weekend on Saturday September 10 in Westchester County for the Purchase College Invitational in Purchase, NY
