Manuel Akanji’s City shirt number confirmed
Manuel Akanji will wear shirt number 25 at Manchester City.
The Swiss international joins the club from German side Borussia Dortmund, signing a five-year contract until the summer of 2027.
A combative 6ft 2in defender, the 27-year-old has made 41 appearances for his country since making his debut in 2017, helping them to the quarter-finals of last year’s European Championships.
But after wearing the No.16 shirt at Dortmund, Akanji opted to upgrade to No.25 ahead of his move to the Etihad Stadium.
It’s a hugely significant number for our recent success, having been released by club legend and former captain Fernandinho at the end of his nine-year spell this summer.
The Brazilian won five Premier League titles and eight other major trophies during his time at the Etihad Stadium.
Prior to the midfielder’s arrival in 2013, the former owner of the No.25 was longtime goalkeeper Joe Hart, who stepped into the shirt during our maiden Premier League title campaign in 2011/12.
Other notable names to wear the number in recent years include Wayne Bridge and Emmanuel Adebayor, doing so for one season in 2008/09 and 2009/10 respectively.
