Xie Paces Hall as UConn invite standings tighten

HAMPDEN, MASS. – Senior Wen Liang Xie (Zhaoqing, China) shot a 1-under, 71, on Monday and the Seton Hall men’s golf team is currently in fourth place after two rounds of the UConn Invitational.

Xie climbed the standings on Monday after four birdies and 11 pars. Through 36 holes he is tied for 13e place in the overall standings with a 6 over par, 79-71-150. Two more Pirates are in the Top 10 after two rounds, but The Hall struggled to get that fourth big score.

In two rounds, The Hall is tied for fourth place among 14 teams with host Connecticut. Today, the Pirates shaved nine shots from Sunday’s round and finished with an 8-over, 296. Currently, they are 25-over, 305-296-601. St. John’s, the team leader after 18 holes, is still ahead with 19 over par. Rhode Island is second at 21 over par and Long Island is third at 23 over par.

Xavier are a fourth BIG EAST team in the field and they are currently in ninth place at 35 over par.

The individual pirate leader after two turns is Wanxi Sun (Danville, California). The junior birdied four Monday en route to a 2-over, 74. Currently, he’s tied for fourth among 78 individual golfers with a 2-over, 72-74-146.

Rhode Island’s Brandon Gillis has a six-stroke lead in the field and is the individual leader at 5-under with 18 holes to play.

Another hacker with a strong tournament in Hampden is a freshman George Fricker (Woodbridge, England). The newcomer shaved three strokes off his first-round score and overcame a troublesome fourth hole to shoot a par-1, 73. He is currently tied for ninth with a par-5, 76-73-149 .

Second year Angus O’Brien (Barwon Heads, Australia) had 13 pars en route to his second straight 6-over-par, 78, on Monday. He is currently tied for 42n/a with a 12 over par, 78-78-156.

First-year student Jack Bosworth (Simsbury, Conn.) completed the roster on Monday with a 10-over, 82. He is currently 18-over for the tournament with an 80-82-162.

Teams will compete against five golfers and count the four lowest scores per round.


The teams will play 18 holes over three days, from Sunday to Tuesday.
